Country music fans from Newfoundland to British Columbia will soon get a chance to see Stompin’ Tom Connors, Canada’s King of Country Music, in his first feature film ACROSS THIS LAND.
Produced by Kit Film for Cinépix of Montreal, ACROSS THIS LAND marks a major achievement in Canadian film making. It’s the first full-length musical ever produced in this country. Unlike other films about recording stars, ACROSS THIS LAND is as much a documentary on the audience, as it is on the performer.
In order to capture the “soul” of country music, Stompin’ Tom was filmed doing what he does best; performing live before an enthusiastic crowd of country-western faithful. The result is a happy expression of “musical magic” that just naturally happens when a lot of people get together to have a good time. Listening to Stompin’ Tom, one begins to understand why country music is sweeping the land. His songs are happy, sad, down home numbers that appeal to people of all ages in all walks of life. Tom’s style is his own. And his humour is infectious. Each song he sings reflects the places he’s been and the people he’s met.
In ACROSS THIS LAND, Tom performs many of the songs that gave him Canada’s coveted Juno award, three years in a row: Songs like Bud The Spud, Sudbury Saturday Night, Round The Bay And Back Again. Special animation techniques have been used to illustrate several of Stompin’ Tom’s songs; like The Ketchup Song and The Piggy Back Race. This blending of animation with songs makes ACROSS THIS LAND not just a musical, but a film experience everyone can enjoy. Appearing with Tom in ACROSS THIS LAND are several other well-known Canadian country stars. Sharon Lowness from Nova Scotia, Chris Scott from the Niagara Peninsula, Bobby Lalonde from the Ottawa Valley, Kent Brockwell from Peterborough, and Joey Tardif from Aylmer, Ontario.
