John Dunning

Né à Verdun, Québec, John Dunning fait ses débuts dans l’industrie du divertissement lorsqu’il succède à son père, à titre de propriétaire et exploitant d’une chaîne indépendante de trois salles de cinéma, la Standard Amusement Company.

En 1962, il s’est joint à André Link pour fonder Cinépix Inc. après quoi il a produit plus de 59 longs métrages, soit de manière indépendante ou pour de grands studios.

Parmi les prix et récompenses qu’il a reçus, mentionnons le prix de la Bobine d’or décerné en 1980 pour Meatballs, le Prix de l’Association canadienne de cinéma-télévision pour contribution exceptionnelle en 1989, et la Nymphe d’or pour le film “Princes in Exile” qui a valu les éloges de la critique, décernée lors du Festival de télévision de Monte-Carlo en 1991.

La contribution remarquable à l’industrie canadienne du cinéma de John Dunning et d’André Link leur a valu un Génie en 1993. En 1997, l’année du lancement du Playback Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame, ils ont été intronisés au Temple de la renommée, catégorie du long métrage. En 2011, l’association des critiques de films de Toronto (Toronto Film Critics Association) a décerné le prix Clyde Gilmour à John Dunning à titre posthume, un prix accordé aux Canadiens et Canadiennes, dont le travail a contribué à la compréhension et à l’appréciation du cinéma dans leur pays natal.

Born in Verdun, Quebec, John Dunning started in the entertainment industry by succeeding his father as the owner and operator of the three theatre independent cinema chain called Standard Amusement Company.

In 1962, he teamed up with André Link to form Cinépix Inc. and has gone on to produce over 59 feature films both independently and for major studios.

Among Dunning’s honours are the Golden Reel Award for Meatballs in 1980, the 1989 Canadian Film and TV Association award for Special Achievement, and the Golden Nymph (top honour at the Monte Carlo Film Festival) for the critically acclaimed Princes in Exile.

To mark their accomplishments, Dunning and partner Link were awarded a special Genie Award in 1994 to honour their “outstanding contribution to the business of filmmaking in Canada”. In 1997, the inaugural year of the Playback Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame, they were inducted into the Feature Film category. Shortly after his death in 2011, John received the 2011 Toronto Film Critics Association Clyde Gilmour Award, given to Canadians whose work has in some way enriched the understanding and appreciation of film in their native country.

André Link

Né à Budapest, Hongrie, élevé à Paris, France, André Link a émigré au Canada en 1954. Il a d’abord travaillé dans l’industrie cinématographique à titre de représentant de International Film Distribution, une importante entreprise canadienne de distribution de films. En 1962, André Link s’est associé à John Dunning pour créer Cinépix Inc.

Un des membres fondateurs de l’Association canadienne des distributeurs et exportateurs de films, André Link en a été élu président à deux reprises, de 1985 à 1990. En 1982, il est membre de la Commission Fournier établie pour promouvoir la production et la distribution de films québécois et en 1988 il est nommé président de l’Institut du cinéma québécois avec un mandat de trois ans.

En 1989, Link a reçu un prix de réalisation spéciale de l’Association canadienne du film et de la télévision. Il a également été vice-président de l’Association nationale des distributeurs canadiens de films et de vidéos. En 1994, Link a été nommé au Conseil d’administration de Viacom Canada.

En 1993, l’Académie canadienne du cinéma et de la télévision décerne à André Link et à John Dunning le prix Génie Air Canada, reconnaissant ainsi leur « contribution exceptionnelle à l’industrie du cinéma au Canada » De 2000 à 2006, André Link a occupé le poste de président de Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. En 2007, MM. Link et Dunning font partie des neuf premiers lauréats intronisés au Panthéon canadien du cinéma et de la télévision. En 2008, Link a distribué le film “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis”.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, and educated in Paris, France, André Link emigrated to Canada in 1954 where he worked in the sales department for International Film Distribution, a major Canadian film distribution company, until both Link and John Dunning founded Cinépix Inc. in 1962.

Link served twice between 1985 and 1990 as President of the CAFDE (Canadian Association of Film Distributors and Exporters (which he also helped found). In 1982, he was appointed to the Fournier Commission to promote Quebec film production and distribution and in 1988 he was selected as the President of the Institut québécois du cinéma with a three year mandate.

In 1989, Link was the recipient of a Special Achievement Award from the Canadian Film and Television Association. He also served as Vice-Chairman of the National Association of Canadian Distributors of Film and Video. In 1994, Link was appointed to the Board of Directors of Viacom Canada.

To honour André Link and partner Dunning “outstanding contributions to the business of filmmaking in Canada” a special Genie Award was awarded to them in 1993 by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. From 2000 to 2006, André Link held the position of President of Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. In 2007, Link and Dunning were among the first nine inductees into the Canadian Film and Television Hall of Fame. In 2008, Link distributed the film “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis”.
